K-2 Vienna Route Metro Subway, Arlington, Virginia (1974-1979)
Between 1974 and 1979, the Nello L. Teer Company contributed to the construction of the well-known Metro mass transit system in Washington, DC. In contract with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), the company completed a 3,000 lineal foot section of subway including a station. While maintaining high density vehicular and pedestrian traffic in the area, the company was able to excavate 110 feet (34m) deep in the wet soil along the Potomac and cast twin concrete subway tunnels over 2400 (730m) in length. In addition, the company constructed the 600-foot (180m) underground Clarendon Station near Arlington, Virginia, that opened for service in December 1979.
